An International Conference About Smart Infrastructures

The Corinthia Marina Resort, St George’s Bay,

St Julians, Malta

Thursday 6rd December 2012

between 9.00 and 12.30

An International Conference about  Smart Infrastructure and Green IT is going to take place on Thursday the 6th of December 2012 at The Corinthia Marina Resort in St Julians. This conference makes part of the GreenITNet project which is being carried out by the Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency. During this conference, the representatives of this project together with a number of stakeholders will tackle salient topics related with the deployment of Green IT infrastructures. By following this link you can gain access to the agenda for this event.

Information and communication technologies (ICT) have become a driving force of economy and society sustaining growth and prosperity. On line data processing has in the last decade developed into a truly new infrastructure. ICT is ubiquitous and will become more so in the coming years. Also ubiquitous however has become the question of the sustainability of ICT. ICT has been singled out as a fast growing consumer of energy with a sizable carbon footprint. Already ICT consumes 8% of electricity in urban areas. Energy costs have become the largest proportion of ICT costs sometimes questioning the availability of the electricity needed.

Participation and attendance to the Conference will be free of charge. If you are interested in attending, kindly register by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Bringing the European Energy Award to Malta PDF Print E-mail

As part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week activities, MIEMA has organised on Friday 15th June at Corinthia Palace Hotel in Attard, an information workshop about the implementation of the European Energy Award (eea®) methodology in Malta.

This event took place in the context of the MEDEEA transnational project co-funded by the European Commission under the MED programme. The project addresses one of the main weaknesses of the MED i.e. an energy level lower than the EU average. The project promotes the take up of a common tool for energy planning across the Mediterranean, as means to increase efficiency thus reducing both greenhouse gases emissions and the costs of energy consumption. Energy planning is also key to promoting and stimulating the use of renewable energy sources, which does not only bring environmental benefits but brings along also technology innovation, economic development, and a new qualification of the workforce.

This workshops aimed to explain the process, and the progress made in Malta to date, in having towns and cities receive the European Energy Award – eea®. This is in fact a methodology which rewards cities and towns with a label for outstanding efforts in the governance of energy related fields (especially energy efficiency). The main audience of local councils representatives was also presented with the situation of the Maltese presence in the Covenant of Mayors, as well as with various measures that could be taken in the short, medium and long term as part of a Sustainable Energy Action Plan.

The delivered presentations can be accessed at the hyperlinks below:

Public consultation exercise: PV systems in the Maltese Landscape PDF Print E-mail

In the context of its activities within the Enerscapes project, a transnational project is co-funded by the European Commission through the MED programme, MIEMA has organise on 15 June 2012 a public consultation seminar on the impact of Renewable Energy Sources, particularly photovoltaic systems, on the Maltese landscape.

The Maltese landscape is a very sensitive one due to the very small size of the country, high population density, hence built-up area, and the large number of environmentally protected sites. On the other hand, as a country we are bound to consider Renewable Energy Sources (RES) as the most sustainable way to generate energy. Whichever RES option we opt for will have its own environmental impact, but what we have to do is to try to minimise such impact whilst at the same time securing a sustainable energy source. And as the landscape belongs to us all, the energy policy and territorial planning decisions should follow a strong participatory process.

The seminar aimed at presenting and getting feedback on a number of different scenarios related to the installation of PV systems in the Maltese context. The considered scenarios range from full continuation of the current provisions and incentives for PV systems installation, on to the best environmental option and on to the best technical option for the installation of PV systems. The Public Participation Scenario Assessment document further explains all scenarios put forward for consideration. To highlight the numerous perspectives that need to be taken into consideration in respect to RES, and PV systems in particular, a number of presentations were also delivered by representatives of the main Maltese stakeholders in the field. All these can be accessed following the hyperlinks below.

Introduction to Enerscapes

Ms. Diane Cassar, MIEMA

The EU energy policy targets for Malta and local RES strategies for fulfilment

Ing. Godwin Sant, Malta Resources Authority
